I had to wait a good three minutes before I could speak because everyone was so excited and happy for me. Though Goldsmith found USY a welcoming environment when he came out as transgender last year and started transitioning from female to male, he said he was not as comfortable everywhere. Goldsmith recalled an experience in which he was told he could not share a room with other male members on the program.
USY empowers Jewish youth to develop friendships, leadership skills, a sense of belonging to the Jewish People, a deep engagement with and love for Israel, and a commitment to inspired Jewish living through meaningful and fun experiences based on the ideology of Conservative Judaism. There are so many ways to get involved with USY, from local chapter events at your synagogue to longer, larger regional and international events. Our youth groups create special memories and lasting bonds of friendship as well as strong ties to Jewish practices and values. The positive environment allows our children and their families to grow both socially and religiously as they participate in exciting programs and activities. Kadima members participate in monthly activities such as bowling, laser tag and social action projects ranging from nursing home visits to assisting at the San Antonio foodbank.

Orangetown Jewish Center's youth community has earned many accolades and awards over the past 10 years. This is an amazing accomplishment and we are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of the entire community to the aspiring youth at the OJC. The core of Youth activities is built on our participation in the national youth programs of the Conservative movement — Ruach, Kadima, and USY.
USY, for gradesand Kadima, a program of USY for preteens grades though grades vary by region allow your kehilla to engage youth with fun, meaningful experiences based on the ideology of Conservative Judaism. USY is committed to being a safe physical, spiritual and emotional space for teens. As president of the Poughkeepsie chapter, I helped revive the youth group at my synagogue and improved the local Jewish environment for kids and teenagers.
As a teen-led organization, teens can run for and be elected to boards, where they acquire leadership skills and learn how to plan and run programming, delegate responsibility and communicate with peers and adults.
