Pleasure is a broad class of mental states that humans and other animals experience as positive, enjoyable, or worth seeking. It includes more specific mental states such as happinessentertainmentenjoymentecstasyand euphoria. The early psychological concept of pleasure, the pleasure principledescribes it as a positive feedback mechanism that motivates the organism to recreate the situation it has just found pleasurable, and to avoid past situations that caused pain.
In the simplest of terms, anhedonia is the inability to experience pleasure while participating in pleasurable activities. It is a core symptom of a condition known as major depressive disorder MDD. Furthermore, some individuals who experience anhedonia do not have a mental disorder at all. Experts define anhedonia as the inability to feel pleasure.
